St Peter’s Gilbert & Sullivan Society was founded in 1954 by a group of Ravenshead residents with connection to St Peter’s Church choir, headed by the late Mary Williamson. Over the years, it’s reputation has flourished for sparkling productions making the most of the limitations of the small community halls where the performances have been staged. Currently, the productions take place in the Village Hall in Ravenshead.

Most of our members come from surrounding places, though not necessarily from Ravenshead itself, and are drawn by the high standard of the music and production values and the welcoming society. We are always recruiting for next season; all will be made welcome. We aim to make rehearsing as much fun as the performances. We are always on the lookout not only for singers and actors, but also in the vital technical and ‘backroom’ roles.

We produce a main show each year, usually during the February half-term holiday, and during the rest of the year put on smaller concerts. Coming up…

Presenting The Gondoliers, 2026

Hold on to your gondolas! In this frothy operatic romp, two charming, cheese-loving Venetian gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe, just want to row, sing, and woo pretty girls (successfully, I might add). But wait! A royal bombshell drops: one of them is actually the long-lost King of the distant kingdom of Barataria—but no one knows which one. Oops.

To avoid any royal faux pas (and possible decapitations), they both head off to rule jointly—splitting duties like sharing a crown and alternating royal proclamations. Naturally.

Meanwhile, back in Venice, Casilda, a noblewoman secretly in love with her handsome servant Luiz, discovers she was married as a baby to one of the gondoliers. Drama! But which one? (Insert soap opera gasp.)

Add in a dotty but determined Duke and Duchess, mistaken identities, a hilariously clueless Inquisitor, and enough satire to roast the British class system—and you’ve got a whirlwind of love, laughs, and lace-up doublets.

In the end, true loves are reunited, the real king is revealed (spoiler: it’s not either gondolier), and everyone lives happily ever after… with a catchy finale, of course.
